State Highway 1 in Auckland has been reopened after an incident saw it closed earlier in the evening.

All lanes southbound were shut between Ellerslie and Greenlane as police worked to resolve the situation, which they've revealed was caused by someone fleeing from them on foot.

Police say the incident occurred following a crash between a car and a truck on the Mountain Rd overbridge.

While they were speaking to the driver who caused the incident, he tried to make a run for it, they explained in a statement.

As a safety precaution, police were forced to close the motorway southbound just after 6pm.

The man has now been captured and taken into custody.

Earlier, traffic was at a standstill and motorists had been told to be patient if they experienced delays.

Police advised that if possible, motorists should avoid the area.
