The Department of Internal Affairs (DIA) has launched an investigation into a charity which runs what it claims is an artificial intelligence (AI) system for the medical profession.

The AI system called Zach was subject to serious scrutiny in a Spinoff investigation, which casts doubt on whether it's actually real.

The supposed AI system communicates through email - sometimes taking 20 minutes or longer to respond to email queries - and sometimes makes spelling mistakes, according to The Spinoff.

Zach is operated by the Terrible Foundation, a registered charity, and is reportedly being trialled by at least one medical professional and one university academic in New Zealand.

"As a result of recent media coverage, the Department has decided to undertake an investigation into the Terrible Foundation to see if it remains eligible to be a registered charity under the terms of the Charities Act," a DIA spokesperson said on Thursday.

"We are unable to provide any further information while this is underway."
