A man has been charged over the death of a hunter in Kaimai-Mamaku Forest Park near Te Aroha last week.

Police were notified at 10:15am on April 2 after a hunter called emergency services to say another hunter had been shot in the chest.

Medical staff reached the man by helicopter but he died at the scene.

A 37-year-old man arrested last week has now been charged with careless use of a firearm causing death after a police investigation.

He will appear in Hamilton District Court on Wednesday.

The Mountain Safety Council offered its condolences after hearing of the incident, and urged all hunters to follow the Firearms Safety Code.
