A man is in the Intensive Care Unit at Christchurch Hospital after sustaining serious injuries in a single vehicle crash near Leeston.
Emergency services were alerted to reports of a rolled car Feredays Road just after 4am on Friday.
The man, in his mid 20's suffered significant injuries to his neck, head and spine as well as injuries to his internal organs, Westpac Rescue Helicopter paramedic crew chief Rick Knight said.
He was trapped for up to an hour before being freed and airlifted to hospital.
Mr Knight said the man was half trapped on the inside of the car between the cab and the roof.
"It was quite bizarre really."
He said the man was "lucky" but it would be a "wait and see."
