A hunter has died following an incident in Kaimai-Mamaku Forest Park near Te Aroha.
Police were notified at 10:15am after a hunter called emergency services to say another hunter had been shot in the chest.
Medical staff reached the man by helicopter but sadly he died at the scene.
Police will be conducting enquiries on behalf of the coroner.
The Mountain Safety Council has offered their condolences and urges all hunters to follow the Firearms Safety Code.
It says it's heartbroken, and is working with police to understand the events leading up to the incident.
