A 13-year-old girl stole a car and drove it through Paraparaumu with eight other children inside the vehicle.

Kapiti Police responded to reports of a stolen car at 12:30am on Wednesday morning. The Suzuki Swift had been taken from a property in the Paraparaumu Beach area.

An hour later, police chased the car down Manly Street as the driver attempted to evade capture.

When the car did stop, the driver was found to be a 13-year-old girl - and there were eight other children inside the vehicle.

The majority of the passengers - who ranged in age from 10 to 16 years old - weren't wearing seat belts.

All of the children were taken home and were referred to Youth Aid Services.

"Police were disappointed by the poor decisions of not only the driver of this stolen vehicle, but all occupants for putting their lives and other road users at risk in an extremely dangerous situation," Wellington District Police said.
