Four adults and two children have been rescued after a yacht began sinking near the Mokohinau Islands early on Friday morning.

Police were called after the 30 foot catamaran struck rocks while on its way to Great Barrier Island at around 5am. The six on board managed to make it to shore where they were picked up by a Westpac Rescue Helicopter and the Northland Rescue Helicopter.

Photos show the yacht now completely submerged, with only the mast visible.

The six people were taken to Whangarei Hospital with minor injuries.
