Thousands of Aucklanders still without power

Thousands of Aucklanders are waking up to a third day without power.

Seventeen thousand properties are left to be restored following the monster storm on Tuesday night.

But it could take until the end of Friday, or even the weekend, to have all power back up and running.

"Reinforcements are here from outside Auckland, including from as far away as Palmerston North and Wellington," a spokesman for Vector says.

"All downed power lines should be treated as live, so please stay well away and don’t attempt to cut or move trees that are in contact with lines.

"We acknowledge the extraordinary patience and understanding of our customers and reiterate that we do know you’re waiting, and we will get to you."

Meanwhile winds of up to 120km/h were recorded near Manukau Heads on Thursday night, but there are no reports of further damage at this stage.

Further south, a small tornado has ripped through Taranaki.

Emergency services were called to New Plymouth's CBD at around 7pm on Thursday. Three properties on Gill St suffered minor damage with roofs flying and a window blown out.

Powerco says 500 homes are still without power in the region from wild weather earlier in the week.
