A localised tornado has damaged properties in New Plymouth.
Civil Defence Taranaki told Newshub that the storm had affected the Strandon area.
It says police are assessing the damage and advises residents to stay inside.
NZ Fire told Newshub they were attending three call outs to minor property damage in the area.
The tornado is highly unusual and was not forecast, Civil Defence says. Locals described the sound as similar to a train whistle or roar.
