A Kiwi doctor has earned praise on social media after a photo of him cuddling a baby as he worked was published on Facebook.

According to a post from the Waikato Hospital Facebook page, the doctor was the only one that could calm the baby after his mother went in for tests.

"I believe several people tried but Muir was the only one able to settle him," a spokesperson wrote in the Facebook post.

"So for about an hour the other day our consultant in charge (of the entire ED) was most definitely multi-tasking."

The doctor's full name is Muir Wallace and his wife also works at the hospital as a duty nurse manager, NZME reports.

Followers of the page praised Dr Wallace for his kindness and shared their own stories interacting with him when they went into the hospital.

"You can tell he's an awesome man from that one act! Thank you Muir for caring for 2 people that day above and beyond what you would have to do," one person wrote.

"This Dr is amazing. He looked after my son last night in kids place as he had a burnt face and needed anaesthetic to make sure his eye was ok," another said.

"Such a funny Dr and keep me [at] ease with step by step of what was happening."
