Two dead after bus hits pedestrians in Papatoetoe

Two men have died after being hit by a bus in the Auckland suburb of Papatoetoe on Saturday evening.

Police say the incident happened around 7pm at the intersection of Wyllie Rd and Puhinui Rd.

The serious crash unit is investigating and roads were closed, with diversions put in place.

Senior Sergeant Pete Marriott told media the bus was travelling away from the airport and turned left up Wyllie Rd when the accident happened.

"The pedestrians were on the road... how they came to be on the road at the same time as the [moving] bus is a matter for the investigation," he said.

"We have a number of significant witnesses that we've spoken to and we hope to have a clearer picture of what transpired this evening, in due course.

"It is incredibly tragic that two people have lost their lives... who were just out for the evening, and our thoughts are with families at this time."

Snr Sgt Marriott says three passengers on the bus were uninjured and sent home, and that the bus driver was being "looked after".
