Aucklander Miriam Clements wants the North Shore to be its own independent city state, separate from New Zealand.
Ms Clements, a member of the Logic Party who ran to be the North Shore MP in the 2017 election, is trying to establish a nationwide referendum on the issue.
Under her vision, the North Shore would have its own Reserve Bank and potentially its own currency.
The question the referendum will pose is: "Should the North Shore establish as an independent city-state to demonstrate a new economic model at the heart of New Zealand?"
Ms Clements has requested that a clerk of Parliament and the Governor-General grant her permission to hold a non-binding indicative referendum.
If it is granted, she would need to collect 400,000 signatures or the signatures of 10% of registered voters within one year, and the referendum would then be presented to Parliament.
Ms Clements frequently posts about her views on her Facebook page, including a claim that 1080 is a chemical weapon designed to cause resistance to antibiotics and penicillin.
