A body has been found in the search for a missing 36-year-old man.

The body was found in the Waikato River at around 10:30am on Saturday, police say.

The body is yet to be formally identified.

Police say they are unable to provide any further detail at this stage.

Police had been searching for the 36-year-old man since last Saturday. He was last seen in the Waikato River.

The 36-year-old was wanted in relation to a serious assault on a 26-year-old woman.

Police were called to an address on Montgomery Cres in Bader around 11pm last Friday, and saw him flee.

A police dog tracked him to the river at Cobham Bridge, near the city's gardens.

An hour later with the help of a helicopter they found him, but he disappeared from sight before they could reach him.

A search of the river has been ongoing.
