The Mongrel Mob-attended funeral for a young girl in Porirua turned violent after a cemetery worker was assaulted by two men with guns.

Police were called to Whenua Tapu Cemetery just before 1pm on Thursday after reports of two male attendees brandishing firearms. Stuff reports the men carrying guns were Mongrel Mob members.

"A man, understood to be working at the cemetery, confronted the men about the guns and was subsequently assaulted," a spokesperson told Newshub.

"The men left the scene at the time and firearms were not located. Police are looking to speak to those involved and enquiries are ongoing."

The victim's son has taken to Facebook in anger over his father's assault.

"Does the Mob not have any respect at all anymore for families outside their own? This saddens me so much... I'm beginning to feel ashamed of being from Porirua," Stuff quotes him writing on closed page PORIRUA.
