A south Canterbury woman had an unusual surprise when she stumbled upon an enormous fish.

Susan Caird was with her mother walking along the beach near Pareora, south of Timaru last Friday when they found the massive 3 metre by 2.8 metre sunfish - the heaviest known bony fish in the world.

"We just saw something down on the shorelines and went and had a look and we saw this great big fish," Ms Caird told Newshub.

"We thought it might be a seal or something like that - we didn't know what it was.

"It is a really strange looking fish - it's not really got a tail.

"It's supposed to be the biggest bony fish in the world - I don't know anyone that's seen one."
