A fleeing motorist who drove at Canterbury police officers as they lay road spikes to stop a pursuit has been arrested.

Two Christchurch police officers were laying road spikes on QE2 Drive, near Marshland Rd, around 12.20pm on Tuesday to stop the 27-year-old man who was driving a white Suburu Impreza.

The man had failed to stop for police and was pursued for a short time, before police abandoned the pursuit due to the offender's manner of driving.

The officers were uninjured.

The man has been charged with reckless driving, failing to stop, unlawfully taking a motor vehicle, driving while disqualified and assault on a person with a blunt instrument.

He is due to appear in Christchurch District Court this morning.
