Four people accused of Auckland kidnapping remanded in custody

Four people accused of being involved in the kidnapping two women have been remanded in custody until a court appearance on at 10am on Monday.

A fifth person, a 13-year-old, has been referred to Youth Aid.

The group, aged between 13 and 20, are accused of kidnapping of two women on Thursday night after being interrupted during an attempted car theft.

Both women were forced into the boot of a stolen Mazda Demio, which was then driven to south Auckland.

"Unaware of the earlier kidnapping or the vehicle having been stolen, a Counties Manukau police unit has observed the vehicle travelling in convoy with another car and attempted to stop them," said Det Insp Scott Beard.

"Both vehicles failed to stop. The stolen Mazda Demio continued onto the Southern Motorway and then exited at Ramarama and drove off the side of a bridge, where the vehicle went down an approximately five-metre bank."

Three offenders were caught at the scene, and the other two were tracked to an address at Manurewa and taken into custody.

Four of them face charges of kidnapping, aggravated robbery, unlawful interference of motor vehicle, and unlawful taking a motor vehicle.

A 15-year-old boy is also facing charges of dangerous driving causing injury.

The women received moderate injuries and were taken to Middlemore Hospital.
