A policeman who Tasered a goat 13 times has avoided prosecution.
Constable Carl Pederson was part of a goat chase in Oamaru in December 2016, when the feral creature was herded into a garage by a police dog, the Otago Daily Times reported last year.
The goat, which had already damaged fences and a mobility scooter, was "stressed out and quite unco-operative", Const Pedersen said at the time. It took 13 shots to subdue.
After an investigation costing the Ministry of Primary Industries nearly $25,000, it's now been revealed in documents released to Stuff under the Official Information Act that the police officer won't face charges.
It was "not a standard situation, but a relatively unique set of circumstances" a police spokeswoman told the news site.
There were fears the goat would escape onto nearby State Highway 1 and put motorists in danger. The goat was euthanised.
Animal rights group Safe said it was an "appalling" case, and animal cruelty charges should have been laid.
