A Christchurch police officer is under investigation for reportedly texting a vulnerable woman after she visited a police station.

The officer was working at the front counter of the Christchurch police station and sent several text messages to the woman after she visited, Stuff reports.

Canterbury District Commander Superintendent John Price confirmed to Newshub an employment investigation is underway regarding the conduct of an officer.

Police have not revealed the nature of the texts and are unable to comment further until the investigation is complete, he says.

"The public rightly expects high standards from police staff," Supt Price said.

"As an organisation, we expect our staff to maintain the highest levels of service and to act with integrity, empathy, professionalism and respect at all times.

"If an officer's conduct is not in line with police values, we will not hesitate to investigate and deal with the matter appropriately."
