Police have tracked down the man who told people there had been a shooting at a local marae in Putāruru in Waikato on Thursday evening.

Emergency services were notified of an incident at Whakaaratamaiti Marae just before 5pm.

The calls followed a man approaching passers-by in the area, saying that someone had been shot.

However, police have since confirmed there is "nothing to indicate that anyone has been shot and there is no risk to the community".

Police said they are currently speaking to the man to understand why he told others there had been a shooting.

"We understand this has been an anxious time for Putāruru residents," police said in a statement.

Putāruru is about an hour's drive south of Hamilton.
