Kiwi musician Carl Perkins' life has been celebrated at the Te Puke Marae in his home town of Raetihi, his body being laid to rest at a confirmed urupā at 11am on Saturday morning.

Perkins, who passed away on Wednesday aged 59, was a member of reggae bands Herbs and House of Shem.

He had been battling bowel cancer for 15 months before his death.

House of Shem  took to Facebook to welcome fans to come say farewell.

Perkins joined Herbs as a percussionist on their second album, Light of the Pacific, and was credited with writing the hit, 'Long Ago'.

The past 10 years saw him play in House of Shem with two of his sons, until March this year when he was too sick to continue.

Perkins is survived by his wife and five sons.
