A Tauranga councillor is optimistic the city will one day get its own museum.

The majority of residents voted against the idea in a recent referendum.

But Councillor Larry Baldock believes there's still hope.

"The fifth largest city in the country cannot continue to have no place for history to be told, and for young people, school children, to go and learn about it."

The council's final decision on a museum will be made late next month when the Long Term Plan is adopted.
