A teenager has died in a crash after failing to stop for police in Wellington.
Six people were in the car, reported stolen on Friday, when police began a pursuit on State Highway 1 near the Terrace Tunnel around 3am on Saturday.
The driver continued to flee from the single police patrol car, driving north on the motorway, before crashing south of the Tawa interchange.
One teenager died at the scene. The five others in the car were taken to Wellington Hospital with minor to moderate injuries.
Police have notified the teen's family.
"Our thoughts are with them at this very difficult time," Wellington district commander Supt Sam Hoyle said.
"A number of investigations will now commence - a serious crash unit investigation and an internal police investigation.
"The Independent Police Conduct Authority has been notified."
The road remains closed and police expect to provide further information later today.
