A 17-year-old man has been arrested following a violent assault on a man at Auckland's Onehunga train station.

The offender allegedly assaulted the victim as he waited for his train and stole his belt, wallet and phone.

The victim was left with serious head injuries following the attack.

Police found the offender on Thursday evening and he was arrested without incident. Two other people are also helping with enquiries following the attack.

Detective Senior Sergeant Scott Armstrong says information from the public was very helpful to the investigation.

"This was a traumatic event for our victim and we would like to thank the community, as the information provided to us in this situation helped hold to account the person responsible for a serious assault," he said.

The offender has been charged with robbery by assault and aggravated wounding. He will appear in the Auckland District Court on Friday.
