It could be a rough day on the weather front for many parts of the South Island.

MetService says an active front will bring heavy rain and severe west-to-northwest winds tomorrow through to Monday.

Heavy rain warnings are in place for Fiordland, Westland, Canterbury and Otago Lakes.

"And in behind the front, cold air will lower snow levels over the lower South Island," MetService said on Facebook.

"Currently there is a road snow warning out for Milford Rd, but more road snow advisories are likely to be issued this evening or tomorrow."

Severe gales will hit the Canterbury Plains and High Country.

In the north, there are strong wind warnings out for Wellington, Wairarapa and Tararua through to at least Tuesday.
