A 16-year-old youth has been arrested over the attempted aggravated robbery of a Grey Lynn dairy on Tuesday evening.

The youth has undergone surgery and it is likely charges will be laid in the next day or so.

Police enquiries are continuing into the case.

Two men, one armed with a knife, entered the store on Great North Road in Grey Lynn just after 7pm on Tuesday.

"This appears to be an unprovoked and violent attack and police are determined to hold the offenders to account," said Superintendent Karyn Malthus.

The mother and her adult son stabbed in the attack received serious and critical injuries in the incident and have since undergone surgery. They are now in a stable condition.

A local retailer who witnessed the scene told Newshub they saw somebody leave the store after the stabbing walking "casually" while holding a four to five inch long knife covered in blood.
