Auckland's fuel tax is officially on its way after it passed its third reading.

It means an extra 11.5 cents will be slapped onto every litre from Sunday July 1. Barney Irvine, from the Automobile Association, says panic purchasing is unlikely.

"We don't expect to see anything out of control around the stations, we don't expect to see pretty long queues or any sort of chaos as people desperately try and fill up," he told Newshub.

Transport Minister Phil Twyford says overall the city will benefit from the extra money raised by the tax.

"Rest easy knowing that there's a fully-funded, 10-year, $28 billion investment plan to fix the city's transport woes," he said.
