Auckland woman Patricia Wright got a nasty surprise on Thursday evening when she bit into a Tim Tam biscuit and discovered an old safety pin lodged inside.

She had just got into bed with a cup of tea and a Tim Tam biscuit, but her evening turned out to be not as relaxing as she'd planned.

"I bit into it and the next thing I felt this grittiness in my mouth, and it was a small open safety pin," she told Newshub.

She's thankful that she was not injured by the safety pin, which looks in a photograph she took to be old and rusty.

"Had I swallowed it, it could have torn up my insides," she said.

Ms Wright bought the Tim Tams from New World in Freemans Bay, and has spoken to the store who told her it would investigate.

Ms Wright also lodged a complaint with the biscuit's producer Arnott's.

A spokesperson for Arnott's said the company had reached out to Ms Wright and will undertake a "strong investigation" to determine whether it is a genuine complaint.

While it was too early to comment on the nature of the complaint, the spokesperson said the company takes complaints "very seriously".

"The safety of our products is absolutely paramount," they said.
