An Auckland woman has been left with serious injuries after she was run over by a thief attempting to steal her car.

The female offender broke into the 58-year-old's home in Massey just before midnight on Tuesday evening, and she woke after hearing a car start in the driveway on Royal Rd.

She dashed outside towards the car to try to stop the offender, who struck her - leaving her with serious injuries.

The offender left the car and ran off down Massey Rd while the woman was taken to hospital.

Police believe she has been breaking into other cars in the area, and are now asking the public to come forward with any information that could help the investigation.

The offender is described as a young Māori or Polynesian female of slim build, with long brown hair parted in the middle.

"We'd like to reassure the community we are doing everything we can to apprehend this offender," said detective senior sergeant Callum McNeill.

Those with information are urged to contact Waitemata Crime Squad on (09) 839 0697, or anonymously call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
