Baby Ardern-Gayford ready to go home

New Zealand's 'first family' is expected to make their first public appearance on Sunday morning.

Jacinda Ardern has been showered with gifts since giving birth to a daughter in Auckland Hospital on Thursday.

A bouquet of flowers from Saudi Arabia was so big, the Prime Minister shared it with other mothers in the maternity ward.

Ms Ardern and partner Clarke Gayford, a TV fishing show host, are yet to announce a name for their baby girl, who met her grandparents on her mother's side for the first time on Saturday.

"She's such a little cutie and with such fine features," said Laurell Ardern.

Once they've left the hospital, the new parents will have six weeks out of the limelight to adjust to their new life, before Ms Ardern goes back to her day job of running the country.

Veteran NZ First leader Winston Peters is currently in charge.
