A baby is in hospital after receiving the wrong medication at a Hawke's Bay pharmacy, causing it to stop breathing.

The one-month-old was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit at Hawke's Bay Hospital on Tuesday.

"An incorrect medication was dispensed by a Hawke's Bay community pharmacy to the family," the Hawkes Bay District Health Board said in a statement on Thursday evening.

"The baby is in a serious-but-stable condition, and recovering well. Clinicians are confident the baby will make a full recovery."

The parents are with their baby and say they're grateful for the support and clinical care they've received at the hospital, the statement said.

"They have asked media to respect their privacy so they can focus on their new baby and its recovery."

It is not clear which pharmacy the mistake occurred at.
