Kaikōura has been cut off.

Bad weather in the region has forced State Highway 1 in both directions to be shut and the inland route to Mount Lyford is also closed.

A heavy rain warning is in place for the Kaikōura ranges until 6:00pm with peak intensities of up to 10 to 20mm per hour of rainfall expected.

An update on the road's condition is expected later on Wednesday morning.

Kaikōura had previously been completely cut off following the November 2016 earthquake, when State Highway 1 and the rail line were both severely damaged.

The road eventually reopened in December 2017 after a year of work to repair it.
