The Bay of Plenty has been hit with torrential rain, causing surface flooding and slips in the region.

There is flooding at Papamoa Beach, Te Puke, Mount Maunganui, Otumoetai and Katikati, a police press release reveals.

Authorities are monitoring the situation and are not aware of any weather-related injuries. They say some people in cars have been affected by the rain.

Police ask that any non-essential travel in the region be avoided.

Motorists who have to drive are advised to take care, and follow the directions of emergency services and roading contractors, as some local roads have been closed.

The North Island continues to be hammered with wet, windy weather this Queen's Birthday weekend.

Two people were trapped in a car in Wellsford, northern Auckland, following heavy rain on Sunday.

Several motorists who were trying to drive their vehicles through heavy surface flooding in Pakuranga found themselves stranded.

At least 20 Auckland homes suffered water damage.
