The future of the ChristChurch Cathedral will be revealed on Friday morning at 11.

A joint venture deal is still to be signed off, nine months on from the Anglican Synod accepting the Government-brokered funding package to reinstate the iconic building.

The cathedral was destroyed in the February 2011 earthquake and will cost around $104 million to reinstate.

Money for the reinstatement will come from:

  • Government contribution: $10 million grant and a $15 million loan that won't need to be repaid if the loan conditions are met
  • Great Christchurch Buildings Trust: $13.7 million
  • Christchurch City Council: $10 million
  • Anglican Church insurance payout: $42 million

Before the synod's decision, other options included knocking the existing structure down and rebuilding from scratch, or gifting the site to New Zealand and letting the Government decide what to do next.
