The 18-year-old charged over the death of 17-year-old Robbie Cederwall was tearful as he faced the judge for his first court appearance this morning.

The man, who appeared in North Shore District Court, has interim name suppression and is charged with dangerous driving causing injury, with more charges likely to follow.

He was driving the ute that crashed at Rothesay Bay on June 23, injuring Robbie who later died in hospital.

His lawyer said the accident had a huge impact on all parties involved, who were all young and vulnerable.

Police asked for interim name suppression due to the early stages of the investigation, and the seriousness and sensitivity of the case which had caused "considerable upset to the community".

The man was remanded without plea and will reappear in mid-July.
