Is this New Zealand's stupidest burglar?

After allegedly breaking into the Hawera house of Kurt Smith last Tuesday, the suspect stole an iPod, iPad and laptop. He then decided to test out his ill-gotten gains by taking several selfies.

However his plan went awry as he inadvertently uploaded the photos to his victim's iCloud account.

"Some of the selfies were in our sleepout. I could see my league jerseys in the background," Mr Smith told NZME.

"He had tried to delete them, but they were still sitting in the deleted folder."

The alleged burglar then compounded his stupidity by breaking back into Mr Smith's house - while a police officer was arriving to take fingerprints.

Leaving behind more fingerprints and a soiled pair of Batman underwear, the suspect managed to escape on foot. However he was soon cornered by Mr Smith's friends.

"They recognised him because he was wearing my clothes," Mr Smith told NZME.

"He was wearing my Nikes and nice pants. He had his own jersey on but after they arrested him I found he was wearing my T-shirt too."

Police took the teen into custody, and he now faces justice.

"A 16-year-old male was arrested yesterday and has been charged with multiple residential burglaries in the Hawera area," a police spokesperson told Newshub.

"The matter is now being dealt with in the Youth Court."
