An expert on our food traditions says a lot has changed in our recipes - and not all for the better.

Emeritus Professor Helen Leach has been awarded a Queen's Birthday honour for her services to culinary anthropology, being made an Officer of the NZ Order of Merit.

After tracing what happens to recipes over time, she says the number of calories has exploded.

"Get your nana's cookbook - have a look and compare recipes… and see what's happened," she told Newshub.

Prof Leach says the super-sizing is a real concern.

She says we think the US taught us to supersize - but there's been a lot going on in our own homes in changing recipes to boost the calories.

"I do a great big spreadsheet, and suddenly an evolutionary path is mapped out in front of you for this particular recipe, and it's really quite exciting. Then I try and make some of them."

In her 70s, Prof Leach has written or contributed to dozens of books.
