Footage reveals devastation after Gisborne downpour

  • 05/06/2018

There's a massive clean-up ahead in Gisborne, with locals waking up to devastation on the roads following a torrential downpour over the weekend.

The rivers are packed with fallen logs and many streets are still flooded. A video posted to Facebook by a man who wishes to remain anonymous shows the Wigan Bridge, which overpasses the Hikuwai River, piled up with logs.

Heavy rain is still falling, and Civil Defence fears the river could rise again.

Nearby some homes in Tolaga Bay have been destroyed by the floodwaters.

Emergency manager Louise Bennett says contractors are working hard to restore power to 29 houses which have been left off the grid since Monday evening.

Ms Bennett says clearing damaged bridges and roads are also a priority for clean-up crews.

Up to another 50mm of rain is expected on the East Coast today.
