Orchards in Hawke's Bay have had to deal with their fruit floating in floodwaters after this week's storm.

Monday saw heavy rain across most of the North Island, with the worst affecting Hawke's Bay and Gisborne.

Approximately 130mm of rain fell over 12 hours in the Gisborne ranges, leaving paddocks flooded and over a thousand without power on Tuesday.

Fruit grower Tim Egan says this is will be a set-back for business.

"There will be some citrus growers around the district that will be trying to pick their crops over the next couple of months and this can make life difficult for some of those," he said.

He says if it weren't for the council's recent drainage and flood schemes, the situation would be much worse.

"Fortunately for most we've now got reasonably good drainage systems and rivers have been kept clean by the district council," he said.
