Gisborne knee-boarder makes most of the wet weather

While many in the regions are still recovering from Monday's storm, some are making the most of the wet weather.

Gisborne was the worst-hit region in New Zealand overnight, and one resident has since been filmed knee-boarding along a makeshift waterway after the heavy rain flooded a roadside drain.

Conner Andrews can be seen holding onto a rope tied to the back of a truck that is speeding along the side of the road.

Local Shanan Gooch filmed the incident while driving down Tucker Rd in Makauri.

Newshub figured Mr Andrews' skills rivalled those of Point Break's Patrick Swayze, and edited a scene from the film into the stunt video.

State Highway 2, between Gisborne and Ōpōtiki , remains closed at Te Karaka due to flooding.

A strong wind watch is in place in the region.

Power was returned to around 500 properties on Tuesday morning, but over 1000 Gisborne homes are still without power.
