Grille cat's family found

The family of a cat who travelled from Auckland to Taranaki have come forward, revealing he is a much loved pet called Phillip.

His ordeal was described as an "unbelievable survival story" by the North Taranaki SPCA after he was discovered clinging to the car's grille after the four-hour trip on Tuesday.

The driver didn't make any stops along the way, not realising Phillip was experiencing a hellish fight for his life. In fact, the cat struggled to hold on so much that he lost claws.

When the driver parked up at a New Plymouth hotel, passers-by saw the cat and alerted staff. The SPCA then managed to safely extract him.

According to the SPCA was touch-and-go once Phillip was extracted from the car and he was treated for hypothermia and dehydration following the ordeal.

Nearly two days after the news went public the SPCA has revealed Phillip's family has come forward and are extremely happy to have him back.

"We have been contacted by the owner of our miracle car cat... he will be going back to a very happy family."
