Heavy rain and flooding submerge Northland roads

Heavy rain has pounded the upper North Island on Thursday morning, leaving the region drenched and roads under water.

"Some areas, like Whangarei, received more rain in the past 27 hours (143.6 mm) than they normally receive in the month of June (132 mm)," NIWA tweeted.

MetService has issued a severe weather watch for possible heavy rain and severe gales affecting parts of Northland and northern parts of Auckland until around midday.

Photos taken in Northland show the extent of the devastation, with roads covered in debris and water.

Police warn SH1 at Puhipuhi Road, Whakapara has been shut due to flooding.

"We estimate there is almost half a metre of water coming across the road, and it appears to be rising," a spokesperson says.

"Diversions are in place along Jordan Valley Rd and Hukerenui Rd. But drivers should avoid the area and make alternative travel plans."
