A fire at an historic Auckland movie theatre has been contained after 15 fire crews were sent to the scene.

The former Old Ambassador Theatre on Great North Rd in Pt Chevalier, near the shops, is now home to an international art collection.

Approximately 15 fire trucks were dispatched to the scene after calls from members of the public about smoke coming from the building, shift manager Scott Osmond said.

The art deco building, designed in 1929, has in recent years been home to Natasha Francois and her artist partner Peter Roche who uses it as his art studio to construct neon installations worth thousands of dollars.

There are no details of the cause of the fire at this stage.
