Power was cut to more than 3000 homes on Monday after a tornado ripped through the north Taranaki region on Monday.

Residents in the Motunui, Urenui and Okoki areas had power cut at around 2:42pm and restored by 6:15pm, Powerco Network Operations Manager Phil Marsh said.

A video of the tornado, which was caught on camera and shared to Facebook, shows the tornado in action outside Waitara.

A severe thunderstorm warning is in place for Taranaki, Waitomo and Taumarunui regions until midnight on Monday.

MetService says heavy rain of 10 to 25mm per hour could fall as well as strong wind gusts reaching around 90 km/h could hit the Taranaki region. Hail between 5 to 15mm in diameter could also fall.

A Fire and Emergency spokesperson said there had been no reports of tornados, however there had a number of flood related callouts in Feilding and surrounding areas.
