The family of the late All Black great Jonah Lomu say they've been blindsided by revelations his headstone will be unveiled on Monday.

They only found out about the headstone's unveiling on Thursday, NZME reports, and his mother will miss the ceremony after flying to Fiji, unaware of the plans.

Lomu died in 2015 aged only 40, after a long battle with kidney disease.

"We're a bit suspicious about the timing of the unveiling," his brother John told NZME. "We just found out like everybody else on Thursday."

Lomu's third wife Nadene is in charge of his grave, which has gone without a headstone since his death.

Friends and family of the legendary winger also claim the epitaph was prepared without their input.

"It better not have Nadene's parents on it because it would be a big insult to the Lomus," his personal trainer Henry Vaeoso told NZME. "I know the boys will dig it up."

Lomu is buried at the Manukau Memorial Gardens.
