A light earthquake has shaken the North Island, 15km east of Turangi.

The quake was a magnitude-4.6 and struck at a depth of 90km.

It hit just before 5pm on Thursday night, and has been felt by more than 1400 people, according to GeoNet.

Those that felt it range from the Bay of Plenty to Nelson. Many in the Wellington region reported feeling the tremors.

In 2016, there was a magnitude-4.0 earthquake in a very similar area, though a little shallower than Thursday's one.

GeoNet told Newshub the quake is not unexpected, as it is a very tectonically active area.

The quake comes just 18 hours after a 4.7-magnitude earthquake struck Te Kaha on Wednesday night.

GeoNet says the two quakes are unrelated.
