Police have charged a 31-year-old man with murder following the death of a five-month-old boy in Wellington Hospital on Tuesday.

The man, who knew the baby, appeared in the Wellington District Court on Wednesday.

He has also been charged with wounding the baby with intent to cause grievous bodily harm between May 7th and June 4th.

He has been granted interim name suppression and has been remanded in custody, to re-appear in the Wellington High Court on July 4.

"Emergency services were initially called to an address in Upper Hutt on Monday 11 June where the boy was found with serious head injuries," Detective Inspector Grant Wormald said.

"Despite surgery the boy died in hospital yesterday. A scene examination at the address where the baby was found is ongoing."
