A wanted man who fled from Invercargill police, triggering a widespread manhunt, has been found and arrested.

Police say the male driver failed to stop after being signalled to pull over along North Rd, Invercargill, at around 11.40am on Tuesday morning.

After a pursuit, the man allegedly dumped the car and fled on foot, police say.

His escape triggered a widespread manhunt involving a helicopter, the Armed Offenders Squad and dog units.

The man was found hiding in the Waihopai River at around 2:30pm and arrested by police.

He is facing driving charges and a possession of a firearm charge.

Police will not reveal the charges he is facing in relation to the warrant for his arrest.
