No, Jacinda Ardern did not have a labour 'false alarm' last night

Clarke Gayford is known for his wit - but when he sent out a funny tweet last night, he unintentionally led some to believe his partner Jacinda Ardern was going into labour.

"Protip," he posted at around 9pm. "Get your mum to set new records in returning missed calls from you by almost having a baby. Better living everybody."

It led to media reports erroneously claiming Ms Ardern had a labour "false alarm" - with one outlet reporting that she "'almost' had her baby yesterday".

To clarify, by saying Ms Ardern was "almost having a baby", Mr Gayford meant that the Prime Minister is less than a fortnight from her due date - not, as it was interpreted, that she was going into labour on Tuesday.

The Prime Minister's office confirmed to Newshub that it was correct in its interpretation of the tweet.

So while the whole country - including Mr Gayford's mother - is on edge, we may have a few more days to wait yet.
