A witness says the suspect behind an attack at an Auckland dairy walked "casually" out of the store after injuring a mother and son.
The mother and her adult son received serious and critical injuries in the incident and have since undergone surgery. They are now in a stable condition.
A local retailer who witnessed the scene told Newshub they saw somebody leave the store after the stabbing walking "casually" while holding a four to five inch long knife covered in blood.
He walked into the store to find the victim on the floor in shock as bystanders tried to stem the bleeding. He says he could see knife holes in the man's stomach.
“The blood was gushing out of the two holes in his stomach. He wasn’t talking - just looking at the ground and very quiet. He looked grey,” the witness told Newshub.
NZME reports a Nancy Toora, shift manager from a nearby shop, heard the mother and son were stabbed in the attack and knew the mother.
"She was really nice. They would always come here to buy vegetables," Ms Toora said. "It is really scary. It could have been me."
She told NZME the woman's husband normally works in the store and was not in the shop at the time because he is currently on holiday.
Two men, one armed with a knife, entered the store on Great North Road in Grey Lynn just after 7pm on Tuesday.
"This appears to be an unprovoked and violent attack and police are determined to hold the offenders to account," said Superintendent Karyn Malthus.
"We’d like to reassure the community we are doing everything we can to apprehend those responsible for this attack."
Three people are helping police with their enquiries.
